Yellow-collared Lovebird

Overview

The yellow-collared lovebird, also known as the masked lovebird, is a monotypic species in the parrot family Psittaculidae. It is native to the Arusha Region of Tanzania but has been introduced to Burundi and Kenya, with escaped populations observed in Puerto Rico and Arizona.

Identification

• A small parrot measuring approximately 14.5 cm in length.
• Primarily green plumage, with upperparts darker than the lower surfaces.
• Distinctive black head featuring a bright red beak with white above it and white eye rings.
• Continuous yellow on the breast that forms a collar and expands over the nape of the neck.

Habitat

Native to the Arusha Region of Tanzania, the species has been introduced to Burundi and Kenya. Although not their natural range, they have been observed in the wild in Puerto Rico and Arizona, likely as a result of escaped pets.

The blue mutation, where yellow and red pigment genes are not passed on, was originally discovered in wild birds in the 1920s, making it the oldest colour mutation known in the lovebird genus.
