Puff-throated Bulbul

Overview

The puff-throated bulbul (Alophoixus pallidus) is a large songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. First described in 1870, it is native to Southeast Asia and currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Identification

• Large bulbul measuring 23 cm in length
• Olive upperparts and yellow underparts that are duller than those of the similar white-throated bulbul
• Distinctive puffy white throat feathers
• Brown iris and bill with black feet
• Males and females are visually indistinguishable

Habitat

Found across Southeast Asia, including south-central and southern Myanmar, parts of China, Thailand, and Indochina. Its natural habitat consists of subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Did you know?

The species was originally described in the genus Criniger before being moved to Alophoixus in 2009. It is a regular but not obligate cooperative breeder, with groups that may comprise multiple breeding pairs that nest separately in open cups in the understorey.
