Festive Amazon

Overview

The festive amazon, also known as the festive parrot, is a species of parrot in the family Psittacidae. It is found in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. The species comprises two subspecies: A. f. festiva and A. f. bodini.

Identification

• In flight, displays deep blue outer wings, including the outer webs of the primaries and primary coverts.
• Features a red rump, though this marking is reduced in juveniles.
• Subspecies bodini exhibits more red on the forecrown and more blue on the face than the nominate subspecies.

Habitat

Associated with forest, especially Várzea, and woodland growing near major rivers. Locally, the species is also found in coastal mangroves, primarily in Amapá. The nominate subspecies inhabits areas near rivers in the Amazon Basin, while subspecies bodini is found near the Orinoco River.

Did you know?

Although classified as least concern by BirdLife International and the IUCN, the species was uplisted to vulnerable in 2012 due to deforestation models and hunting pressure predicting a rapid population decline.
