Bar-tailed Lark

Overview

The bar-tailed lark (Ammomanes cinctura), also known as the bar-tailed desert lark, is a species of lark in the family Alaudidae. It is found across North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East and western Asia, where it inhabits hot desert environments. While it is a common species in many parts of its range, it is rated as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN despite a slow decrease in numbers.

Identification

• Slightly smaller than the desert lark, measuring 14 to 15 cm, with a smaller, more domed head, a smaller beak, thinner legs and a shorter tail.
• Upper parts are sandy-buff washed with grey, while underparts are whitish with little or no streaking, and the breast and flanks are washed with buff.
• Wings are rufous with dark trailing edges, and the rufous tail features a terminal black band.

Habitat

Its typical habitat is sandy or stony desert or semi-desert with low scrubby vegetation. The bird generally prefers level ground, distinguishing it from the desert lark, which tends to frequent rocky slopes and hillsides.
