Yellow-billed Teal

Overview

The yellow-billed teal (Anas flavirostris) is a South American species of duck that belongs to the diverse genus Anas. It is classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN, owing to its wide geographic range and local abundance.

Identification

• The bill is bright yellow with a distinct black tip and a black band along the ridge of the culmen.
• The head is darker and the neck is shorter compared to the similar yellow-billed pintail.
• The sides are plain and grayish in coloration.

Habitat

The species inhabits freshwater wetlands, showing a preference for palustrine habitats over rivers. Its range includes Argentina, the Falkland Islands, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Brazil, with established populations also present in South Georgia and recorded sightings as far east as Tristan da Cunha.

This species possesses a unique evolutionary relationship with the green-winged teal, despite having a very different appearance. Additionally, its post-copulation behaviour is unique among relatives, as drakes stretch themselves up high and swim alongside females after dismounting.
