Blue-winged Mountain Tanager

Overview

The blue-winged mountain tanager is a species of tanager found in highland environments across parts of South America. It is classified as Least Concern and is a common species with stable populations.

Identification

• Generally bright yellow and black with blue wings and tail.
• Some populations feature a moss-green back.
• Birds in Bolivia and southernmost Peru have a blue rump and a very different voice.

Habitat

It inhabits highland forest and woodland in the Andes of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, with a disjunct population in the Venezuelan Coastal Range.

Populations in Bolivia and southernmost Peru are sometimes recognised as a separate species, the Bolivian mountain tanager (A. flavinucha).
