Identification

  • A large pipit, 17 to 18 cm in length, with olive-brown underparts and dark brown streaking.
  • Wing coverts feature yellow-green edges.
  • Produces a loud, penetrating, thrush-like song, typically delivered from a rock or perch.

Habitat

Found in rocky areas within dry to mesic savanna. Its range spans across Angola, Botswana, Burundi, DRC, Eswatini, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Diet

Feeds on insects and other arthropods, with a particular preference for grasshoppers.
