Chestnut-throated Apalis

Overview

The chestnut-throated apalis (Apalis porphyrolaema) is a small bird in the cisticola family, Cisticolidae, currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is a species of highland forests and is sometimes grouped with the Chapin's apalis.

Identification

• A small bird approximately 12 cm long with mostly grey plumage.
• The nominate subspecies and the affinis subspecies feature chestnut throats, while the Kabobo apalis has an entirely grey throat and paler undersides.

Habitat

This species inhabits highland forests above 1600 m altitude. Its range encompasses Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Diet

The bird feeds on insects and other small invertebrates. It forages by gleaning from leaves and twigs, hover gleaning, and hawking in the air.
