Samoan Starling

Overview

The Samoan starling is a large member of the family Sturnidae native to the Samoan Islands. It is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Plumage: Dark brown with a glossy appearance.
• Bill: Long.
• Vocalisations: Various whistles and other sounds.

Habitat

This species inhabits tropical moist forests on volcanic islands within the Samoan archipelago. It is common and more conspicuous in these habitats than the Polynesian starling, which shares the same environment.

Diet

The bird feeds on a variety of fruits, particularly guava, as well as insects.

Its eggs are a distinct pale blue colour, and it appears to nest year-round in tree cavities, although little is known of its mating or social habits.
