Medium Egret

Overview

The medium egret, also known as the smaller egret or intermediate egret, is a medium-sized heron classified under the genus Ardea or Egretta. It is a resident breeder found primarily in southern and eastern Asia.

Identification

• Size: Approximately 56–72 cm in length with a wingspan of 105–115 cm, placing it between the great egret and the little egret.
• Plumage: Entirely white feathers, with breeding birds displaying loose filamentous plumes on the breast and back.
• Bill: Thick and generally yellow, turning reddish or black in some breeding individuals.
• Posture: Tends to stalk upright with the neck extended forward, possessing a slightly domed head and a shorter, thicker bill than the great egret.

Habitat

The species inhabits shallow coastal and fresh water environments, including flooded fields, and breeds in southern and eastern Asia.

Diet

This heron feeds on fish, frogs, crustaceans, and insects, which it catches by stalking methodically through shallow water.
