Overview

The pale-headed brushfinch (Atlapetes pallidiceps) is an endangered species of bird in the family Passerellidae. It is endemic to the Jubones River drainage in south-central Ecuador.

Habitat

This species inhabits a less than 4 km² area of the Yunguilla Valley, characterised by sparsely-vegetated landslide rifts and fallow fields at elevations between 1,650–1,900 meters. Territories are typically located within 100 meters of a stream containing large stands of Chusquea bamboo.

Diet

The bird feeds on insects, seeds, and fruit, engaging in perch-gleaning behaviour.

Did you know?

Only males appear to vocalise in this species, producing songs composed of 5 to 12 notes separated into three groups that are used primarily to communicate territorial bounds.
