Long-billed Bernieria

Overview

The long-billed bernieria, Bernieria madagascariensis, is a songbird endemic to Madagascar and the only species within the genus Bernieria. Once classified as a greenbul or Old World warbler, it is now recognised as part of the endemic Malagasy radiation Bernieridae.

Identification

• Slender body with an overall length of 17.5–20 cm.
• Brownish green head, upperparts, and tail with mainly yellow underparts.
• Possesses a long, thin bill featuring a small terminal hook on the upper mandible.

Habitat

This species resides in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests throughout Madagascar. Two subspecies are identified: B. m. madagascariensis found in eastern Madagascar and B. m. incelebris in northern and western regions.

Did you know?

The genus name Bernieria honours the French surgeon-naturalist Chevalier J. A. Bernier, who resided in Madagascar between 1831 and 1834.
