The Himalayan shortwing (Brachypteryx cruralis) is a species of chat classified within the family Muscicapidae. It is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

This bird inhabits subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Its range extends across South-east Asia, including the Himalayas, southern China, northwestern Thailand, and northern Indochina.

Diet

Foraging primarily on or near the ground in dense, dark vegetation, it feeds on small insects, larvae, berries, seeds, sprouts, and new plant buds. It is a shy skulker, preferring to remain hidden within the depths of vegetation.

Despite its name suggesting a connection to the Himalayas, the species' range actually extends well into southern China, northwestern Thailand, and northern Indochina.
