Overview

The Javan shortwing (Brachypteryx montana), formerly known as the white-browed shortwing, is a bird species belonging to the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae. It is endemic to the island of Java and is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

This species is restricted to the island of Java, where it favours montane forests. It is described as a shy skulker that prefers to stay on or near the ground within the depths of dark vegetation.

Diet

The Javan shortwing forages on the ground in dense vegetation, feeding on small insects, larvae, berries, seeds, sprouts and new buds of plants. Its nest is constructed from moss and grass stems and placed in a dense shrub.

Once classified as the white-browed shortwing with many subspecies, it was split into five separate species based on deep genetic differences and significant variations in plumage and vocalisation, leaving the Javan shortwing as a monotypic species with no recognised subspecies.
