Eurasian Eagle-Owl

Overview

The Bubo bubo, commonly known as the Eurasian eagle-owl, is one of the largest species of owl and the most widely distributed, residing across much of Eurasia. Often referred to simply as the eagle-owl in Europe and Asia, it is a massive bird of prey that ranges from 56 to 75 cm in length.

Identification

• Possesses a bulky, barrel-shaped build with distinctive erect ear tufts and a blocky head.
• Features orange or reddish-brown eyes and a facial disc that is tawny-buff and speckled with black-brown, forming a frame around the face.
• Plumage is variable, typically showing mottled upper parts with dark streaking, barred wings and tail, and buff underparts with dark wavy barring.
• Legs and feet are feathered almost to the talons, which are black and notably large.

Habitat

Found across a vast range in Europe and Asia, occupying mountainous and rocky areas, coniferous forests, steppes, and remote regions. They often utilise varied woodland edges, shrubby areas with openings, and wetlands, occasionally appearing in farmland or park-like settings in cities.

Diet

Primarily a nocturnal predator that hunts small mammals such as rodents and rabbits, as well as birds and larger mammals. Secondary prey includes reptiles, amphibians, fish, large insects, and invertebrates.
