Senegal Thick-knee

Overview

The Senegal thick-knee (Burhinus senegalensis) is a stone-curlew and medium-large wader in the family Burhinidae. Its vernacular scientific name highlights the prominent joints in its long yellow or greenish legs.

Identification

• Medium-large wader with cryptic plumage and a strong black and yellow-black bill.
• Large yellow eyes that provide a reptilian appearance.
• Distinct from the Eurasian stone-curlew by its single black bar on the folded wing and darker cheek stripe.
• Striking in flight, showing a broad white wing bar.
• Loud song characterised by a repeated 'pi-pi-pi-pi-pi-pi-pi'.

Habitat

A resident breader across Africa between the Sahara and the equator, as well as in the Nile valley. The species prefers dry open habitats that feature some bare ground, preferably near water.

Diet

The Senegal thick-knee feeds on insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates, while also taking other small prey. It is most active during the dawn and dusk periods.
