Grey Wren-Warbler

Overview

The grey wren-warbler (Calamonastes simplex) is a species of bird in the family Cisticolidae. It is a shy bird typically found singly or in pairs within dense bush and undergrowth.

Identification

• Dark brownish-grey plumage with inconspicuous barred markings
• Black tail that wags up and down while foraging
• Red eye
• Sharp call that sounds like two stones striking each other

Habitat

It inhabits dry savanna in Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Although it is more likely to be heard than seen, observers may catch an occasional glimpse of its black tail wagging up and down as it forages.
