Senegal Coucal

Overview

The Senegal coucal (Centropus senegalensis) is a medium-sized member of the cuckoo family, found in lightly wooded country and savannah across central and southern Africa. It is classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• A medium-sized bird, approximately 39 cm in length, with a black crown, nape, upper parts, bill, legs, and long tail.
• Features distinct red eyes and chestnut wings.
• Underparts are creamy white with blackish barring on the flanks, while juveniles are browner and more heavily barred above.
• Advertises its presence with a loud ook-ook-ook call.

Habitat

The species is widespread in central and southern Africa, south of the Sahara, ranging from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia and Kenya in the east. It inhabits grassy environments with trees, such as bushes and savannah.

Diet

This bird consumes a wide range of insects, caterpillars, and small vertebrates, occasionally eating other food items.
