Overview
The yellow-bellied fantail, also known as the yellow-bellied fairy-fantail, is a small bird found in the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayas, and parts of Southeast Asia. It is classified as an altitudinal migrant.
Identification
- Approximately 8 cm in size.
- Yellow underparts with a black eye-stripe.
- White wing-bar and a broad black tail tipped with white.
Habitat
Found in the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayas, and portions of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. It functions as an altitudinal migrant.

Once placed in the family of fantails, DNA analysis revealed it to be a close relative of the fairy flycatcher, leading to its transfer to the family Stenostiridae within the monotypic genus Chelidorhynx.
