Yellow-breasted Greenfinch

Overview

The yellow-breasted greenfinch (Chloris spinoides) is a small passerine bird in the family Fringillidae, native to the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Length of 12–14 cm (4.7–5.5 in) with a weight between 15 and 21 g (0.53 and 0.74 oz).
• Bright yellow underparts and distinct bright yellow wing bars.
• Brown conical bill.
• Sexes possess similar plumage, although the female is less brightly coloured than the male.

Habitat

This species primarily inhabits the mid-altitudes of the Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia, favouring temperate forests and temperate shrubland. Its range extends across Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet and Vietnam.

The scientific name Chloris spinoides combines the Ancient Greek word khlōris, referring to the European greenfinch, with the specific epithet spinoides derived from spinus (the Eurasian siskin) and the suffix -oidēs, meaning "resembling".
