Jerdon's Leafbird

Overview

Jerdon's leafbird (Chloropsis jerdoni) is a species of leafbird found in the forests and woodlands of India and Sri Lanka. Its name honours Thomas C. Jerdon, and it has traditionally been considered a subspecies of the blue-winged leafbird, though it lacks the distinctive blue flight feathers of that species.

Identification

• The male is green-bodied with a yellow-tinged head, a black face and throat, and a blue moustachial line.
• The female has a greener head and a blue throat, while young birds resemble the female but lack the blue throat patch.
• The call consists of a rich mixture of imitations of the calls of various other bird species.

Habitat

This species inhabits forest and woodland environments across India and Sri Lanka.

Diet

Jerdon's leafbirds feed on insects, fruit, and nectar.
