Overview

The checker-throated woodpecker, also known as the checker-throated yellownape or Javan yellownape (Chrysophlegma mentale), is a bird in the family Picidae native to Southeast Asia.

Habitat

This species inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests, as well as the landward edge of mangrove forests. It has a wide range across Southeast Asia, occurring in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia.

Diet

The bird feeds on insects supplemented by berries, foraging by gleaning and probing in the lower and middle canopy storeys.

Did you know?

The species breeds between February and June in Borneo and March to April in Malaysia, excavating its nests in deadwood.
