Rufous Wren

Overview

The rufous wren (Cinnycerthia unirufa) is a bird species in the family Troglodytidae found in the Andean regions of northern South America. It inhabits the dense undergrowth of subtropical and tropical moist montane forests.

Identification

• Length of approximately 16.5 cm with uniform dark chestnut-brown plumage.
• Slight blackish barring on the wings and tail, which is often difficult to observe in the field.
• Blackish lores, with individuals in northeastern Colombia and Venezuela appearing slightly paler on the crown.
• Complex and musical song consisting of repeated notes, trills, and short phrases, often sung in duets.

Habitat

Found in montane areas of northern Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and southwestern Venezuela at altitudes typically between 2,200 and 3,400 metres. The species prefers dense undergrowth within tropical moist forests.
