Splendid Sunbird

Overview

The splendid sunbird (Cinnyris coccinigastrus) is a small Old World passerine belonging to the sunbird group. It is a seasonal migrant that breeds in west and central tropical Africa.

Identification

• 15 cm in length with medium-long, thin, down-curved bills.
• Adult males are mainly glossy purple with a dark green back, wing bar, and a crimson breast patch.
• Females are greenish-brown above and yellowish below.
• Flight is fast and direct on short wings, with the ability to hover when taking nectar.

Habitat

This species is a common breeder in wet savannah and woodland habitats that contain oil palms, Elaeis guineensis. Its range encompasses west and central tropical Africa, where it acts as a seasonal migrant.

Diet

Feeds largely on nectar, using brush-tipped tubular tongues, though it also consumes insects, particularly when feeding its young. It typically perches to feed rather than hovering for extended periods.
