Bicolored Conebill

Overview

The Bicolored Conebill is a small passerine bird belonging to the tanager family. It is a resident breader in South America, found in coastal areas and along the Amazon River basin.

Identification

• Measures 11.4 cm in length and weighs approximately 11 g.
• Adults feature grey-blue upperparts, buff-tinged grey underparts, red eyes, and pink legs.
• Possesses a sharp, pointed bill with bluish primary flight feathers edged in brown.
• Immature birds appear greenish above with pale yellow underparts.

Habitat

This species has a disjunct range comprising populations on the coasts of northern South America and along the Amazon River. Coastal populations inhabit mangroves and adjacent waterlogged forests, while inland Amazonian birds prefer young vegetation on river islands.

Diet

These warbler-like birds feed mainly on insects, occasionally consuming seeds.
