White-browed Shama

Overview

The white-browed shama, Copsychus luzoniensis, is a species of bird in the family Muscicapidae endemic to the Philippines. It is currently assessed as a Least Concern species by the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Females exhibit sexual dimorphism, appearing paler than males with a grey chest and face, along with a brown head, back, and wings.
• Typically found in pairs foraging in the dense and lower foliage.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the islands of Luzon, Marinduque, and the Polillo Islands in the Philippines. It inhabits primary and mature secondary forests, typically occurring below 1,000 m asl.

Diet

The bird is presumed to feed on small insects and larvae, typically foraging in pairs within the dense and lower foliage.

Breeding takes place in April and May, with the nest constructed as a cub of grass and dry leaves that holds two pale green eggs marked with reddish brown spots.
