Overview

The Philippine magpie-robin (Copsychus mindanensis) is an endemic bird species of the Philippines that was formerly considered a subspecies of the Oriental magpie-robin but is now recognised as its own species. It belongs to the family Muscicapidae and is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its wide distribution and adaptability.

Identification

• Possesses a white belly and an entirely black tail.
• Females display a paler grey throat and breast compared to other similar species.
• Distinguished from the Oriental magpie-robin by its smaller size, specifically a smaller bill and wing.
• Vocalisations differ considerably from those of the Oriental magpie-robin.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Philippines and thrives in lowland forests, second growth, cultivated areas, gardens, and agricultural zones up to 1,000 metres above sea level. It is extremely adaptable and can be found in scrub, parks, and even degraded habitats, though it avoids montane forests.

Diet

Dietary information for this specific species is limited, but it primarily consumes insects, small vertebrates, seeds, and fruit. It forages both on the ground and within vegetation.
