Overview

The western bearded greenbul (Criniger barbatus) is a species of songbird within the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

This bird is native to West Africa, where it inhabits subtropical or tropical dry forests and moist lowland forests. Two subspecies are recognised: Criniger barbatus barbatus, which ranges from Sierra Leone to Benin, and Criniger barbatus ansorgeanus, found in southern Nigeria.

The western bearded greenbul was formally described and illustrated in 1821 by the Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck, using a specimen collected in Sierra Leone.
