White-throated Canary

Overview

The white-throated canary (Crithagra albogularis) is a small finch species currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Formerly classified under the genus Serinus, it was moved to the resurrected genus Crithagra following phylogenetic analysis.

Identification

• A small bird approximately 15 cm long with generally dull-coloured plumage.
• Features a yellow or yellow-green rump.
• Possesses a heavy horn-coloured beak, brown irises, and brown legs.
• Males and females are similar in external appearance, and juveniles resemble adults.

Habitat

Found in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa. Its natural habitats include subtropical or tropical dry shrubland and subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland.
