Cryptic Warbler

Overview

The cryptic warbler (Cryptosylvicola randrianasoloi) is a small passerine endemic to the forests of eastern Madagascar. It belongs to the family Bernieridae and is known for its elusive nature and hidden forest habitats.

Identification

• Size: 11 cm long and weighs 8.4 g
• Plumage: Olive-green back and grayish yellow underside
• Bill: Dark upper bill and pale pink lower bill

Habitat

The cryptic warbler prefers evergreen, humid rain forest between 900–2,100 m elevation. It is found in the canopy and sub-canopy of trees and shrubs. Its range spans from Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve to Andohahela National Park in eastern Madagascar.

Diet

Its diet consists of insects, which it forages in the canopy and sub-canopy of trees and shrubs at heights between 2 and 25 m.

Did you know?

The cryptic warbler was first identified as a new species in November 1992 when an unknown passerine was photographed, tape recorded, and collected from Maromizaha Forest in eastern Madagascar.
