Brazilian Tinamou

Overview

The Brazilian tinamou (Crypturellus strigulosus) is a monotypic bird species belonging to the family Tinamidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Approximately 28 cm in length with reddish-brown upperparts, a rufous throat, and a grey breast.
• The belly is whitish, and the legs are brown.
• Females are ochraceous on the upperparts and feature distinct black barring.

Habitat

This species inhabits tropical or sub-tropical lowland moist forests at elevations up to 500 m. Its native range covers northwestern Bolivia, southern Amazonian Brazil, and eastern Peru.

Diet

The Brazilian tinamou forages for fruit on the ground or from low-lying bushes. It also consumes small quantities of invertebrates, flower buds, tender leaves, seeds, and roots.
