Black-chested Jay

Overview

The black-chested jay (Cyanocorax affinis) is a species of bird in the family Corvidae. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, indicating that its population is stable.

Identification

• Measuring 34 cm in length, the bird features a distinctive facial pattern with a mostly black head, face, and chest.
• Violet-blue spots are present above and below the yellow eye, accompanied by a violet-blue malar stripe.
• Underparts and the tip of the tail are white, contrasting with dark violet-blue upperparts and wings.
• No sexual dimorphism is observed in plumage or size.

Habitat

This species is found in Colombia, northwestern Venezuela, Panama, and far eastern Costa Rica. It inhabits subtropical or tropical dry forests, moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest areas.
