Chestnut-winged Babbler

Overview

The Cyanoderma erythropterum is a small babbler species currently recognised within the genus Cyanoderma. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Chestnut-brown plumage with a greyish face and underparts.
• Small size, measuring between 12.5–13.5 cm (4.9–5.3 in) in length.

Habitat

Found in the Malay Peninsula from southern Thailand to Singapore, as well as in Sumatra. The species inhabits forests and shrublands at elevations up to 800 m (2,600 ft).

Diet

Feeds on small Coleoptera beetles, Phasmida insects, ants, and Hemiptera bugs. Its primary foraging strategy is gleaning.

The species was originally described by Edward Blyth in 1842 under the name Timalia erythroptera, and later moved to the genus Stachyris before being reclassified into Cyanoderma in 2020.
