Black-chinned Babbler

Overview

The black-chinned babbler is a small terrestrial bird in the family Timaliidae. It is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Cyanoderma pyrrhops is biscuit-coloured with a distinct black chin and lores.
• It has a buffy grey crown.
• The bird measures 10 cm in length and weighs between 8 and 12 g.

Habitat

This species inhabits subtropical and temperate forests within the foothills of the Himalayas. Its range extends from the Murree Hills in Pakistan to eastern Nepal, occupying altitudes between 245 and 2,750 m.

Diet

The black-chinned babbler is omnivorous.

Did you know?

The species was first described by Edward Blyth in 1844 under the name Stachyris pyrrhops and was later placed in the genus Stachyridopsis before receiving its current classification.
