Rufous-capped Babbler

Overview

The rufous-capped babbler, Cyanoderma ruficeps, is a small bird species within the family Timaliidae. Originally described as Stachyris ruficeps by Edward Blyth in 1847, it is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Plumage is pale olive with a distinct bright rufous crown and nape.
• Small in size, measuring 12 cm (4.7 in) in length.
• Weights between 7 and 12 g (0.25–0.42 oz).

Habitat

This species inhabits temperate forests characterised by dense bushes or bamboo. Its range extends from the Eastern Himalayas through northern Thailand, Laos, eastern China, and Vietnam to Taiwan.

The species was originally named Stachyris ruficeps by Edward Blyth in 1847 for an olive-coloured babbler with a ferruginous crown collected in Darjeeling.
