Pale Blue Flycatcher

Overview

The pale blue flycatcher (Cyornis unicolor) is a small passerine bird in the family Muscicapidae. First described by Edward Blyth in 1843, it is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Superficially similar to the verditer flycatcher but distinctly paler blue
• Greyish underparts extending from the throat to the vent
• Features a discontinuous black eye-patch

Habitat

This species inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests. Its range spans across parts of South and Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The pale blue flycatcher is often found in the same locale as the verditer flycatcher, a bird to which it is superficially similar but which differs by being less pale and lacking the specific greyish underparts and discontinuous eye-patch of Cyornis unicolor.
