Freckle-breasted Woodpecker

Overview

The freckle-breasted woodpecker (Dendrocopos analis) is a medium-sized, pied bird in the family Picidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Medium-sized body with black upper parts heavily barred with white.
• Undertail is red; breast and belly are buff with light flank barring and slight side streaking.
• Whitish cheeks partly bordered by a black line.
• Males have a red crown with an orange forehead, while females have a black crown.

Habitat

Native to Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, this species inhabits subtropical or tropical dry forests, moist lowland forests, and moist montane forests.
