Darjeeling Woodpecker

Overview

The Darjeeling woodpecker (Dendrocopos darjellensis) is a medium-sized pied species in the family Picidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Medium-sized bird with black upperparts featuring large white scapular patches and white-barred flight feathers and tail sides.
• White cheeks and a long black moustache extending to the upper breast.
• Black-streaked, yellow-buff underparts with a red vent and long bill.
• Males possess a red nape patch, while both sexes have yellow neck sides.

Habitat

Found in the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, primarily in the Himalayas and adjoining areas, including Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Tibet. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests.
