Overview

The pygmy flowerpecker (Dicaeum pygmaeum) is a small songbird endemic to the Philippines. It is assessed as a least-concern species by the IUCN, although its population is currently decreasing due to deforestation.

Habitat

This species inhabits tropical moist lowland and montane forests, including both primary and secondary vegetation. It is found throughout the entire Philippines, typically occurring up to 2,000 meters above sea level but mostly seen below 1,000 meters.

Diet

It feeds on fruit, nectar and pollen, often foraging around flowering and fruiting trees and mistletoes. Foraging takes place in the canopy or high in the understory, either singly, in small groups, or as part of mixed-species flocks.

Did you know?

Very little is known about the species' breeding habits, with only a single observation of a fledgling recorded in May. Birds exhibiting enlarged gonads, indicating breeding condition, have been collected throughout the year from February to December.
