Spangled Drongo

Overview

The spangled drongo (Dicrurus bracteatus) is a member of the family Dicruridae and is the only drongo species found in Australia. This bird is characterised by its black, iridescent plumage and complex vocal mimicry.

Identification

• Basically black plumage with blue and purple iridescent highlights.
• Crimson eyes, which are dark brown in juveniles.
• Long, outcurved, and forked tail that appears as if the feathers are crossed over.
• Calls can be astonishingly loud and complex, sometimes resembling a sneeze.

Habitat

The species is found exclusively in Australia, with populations in high-altitude areas around Brisbane in Queensland arriving in late spring. They breed high in isolated trees, constructing cup-shaped nests in open spaces near the top of the canopy.

Diet

It feeds on insects, small birds, and occasionally small skinks. The bird displays uninhibited behaviour while swooping and perching to catch prey, which it can accurately capture midair if offered raw meat.
