Overview

The hair-crested drongo (Dicrurus hottentottus) is an Asian bird of the family Dicruridae that was formerly considered conspecific with the spangled drongo. This species is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

Native to a broad range across Asia, from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and Bhutan through Indochina to China, Indonesia, and Brunei. Twelve subspecies are currently recognised, with distributions ranging from India and Myanmar to various islands in the Philippines, Sulawesi, and Java.

Did you know?

The specific name hottentottus is derived from "Hottentot", a term formerly used for the Khoikhoi, a nomadic pastoral people of southwest Africa. This origin stems from an early 18th-century mistaken belief that the initial specimen had been collected from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.
