Barking Imperial Pigeon

Overview

The barking imperial pigeon, also known as Peale's imperial pigeon, is a species of bird in the family Columbidae. It is endemic to Fiji, where it occurs on most of the medium and large islands. The species is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Typically 40–44 cm in length, with grey upper parts.
• Upper wings and upper tail are a darker shade of brown.
• Possesses a black bill and purple and red eyes.
• Known for producing loud barking "u-oo" calls in long series, as well as a "raa" noise, often associated with mating.

Habitat

Natural habitats include mature tropical moist lowland forests and tropical moist montane forest. It is found on most of the medium and large islands in Fiji, distinguishing it from the Pacific imperial pigeon, which inhabits smaller islands.

Diet

The barking imperial pigeon is frugivorous, feeding on large fruits from trees such as Cananga, Didymocheton, and Myristica (nutmegs). It forages alone or in pairs, though it occasionally occurs in small flocks on fruiting trees.
