Overview

The Sahul cicadabird (Edolisoma tenuirostre), previously known as the common cicadabird or slender-billed cicadabird, is a species of passerine bird in the family Campephagidae. It was previously considered a single widespread species but was split in 2018 into multiple species based on molecular phylogenetic evidence. The current concept of the species is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

Found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Bismarck Archipelago, its natural habitats include temperate forest and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. Six subspecies are recognised, ranging from islands in the Bismarck Archipelago and New Guinea to mainland eastern and north-eastern Australia.

Did you know?

The common cicadabird was described by Mayr & Diamond (2001) as a "great speciator" and was noted by Pedersen et al. (2018) for rapidly colonising and diversifying across the Indo-Pacific island region and Australia during the Pleistocene.
