Cinnamon-breasted Bunting

Overview

The cinnamon-breasted bunting, or Emberiza tahapisi, is a small passerine bird in the family Emberizidae. It is classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN and is widely distributed across mainland sub-Saharan Africa.

Identification

• Small passerine weighing 11.6–21 g and measuring 13–15 cm in length.
• Distinctive striped head with cinnamon-brown underparts; males possess black and white head stripes and a uniform black throat, while females have browner stripes and a smaller, grayish, densely blotched throat.
• Juveniles resemble females but feature buffier head stripes and a paler, browner throat.
• Song consists of short, high-pitched, rapid trills ending in a characteristic final whistle syllable.

Habitat

Widespread across most of mainland sub-Saharan Africa, avoiding deserts, equatorial forests, and high mountain altitudes. Primarily inhabits rocky, lightly wooded hillsides with sparse vegetation and bare soil, though occasionally found in woodlands. Exhibits partial migration, with certain populations moving north during the rainy season and south during the dry season.

Diet

Ground gleaners that primarily consume seeds, occasionally jumping to pull them from the soil. They also eat insects, particularly in captivity, and feed chicks a mixture of seeds and insects.
