Overview

The black-crowned waxbill is a common species of estrildid finch found in western-central Africa. It currently has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 1,000,000 km² and is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

The species is distributed across western-central Africa, ranging from south-eastern Nigeria and Cameroon to south-eastern Sudan, western Kenya, and north-western Tanzania. It also inhabits the islands of Bioko and Mt. Cameroon.
