Eurasian Hobby

Overview

The Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo), often referred to simply as the hobby, is a small, slim falcon classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It belongs to a group of similar falcons and comprises two recognised subspecies: the widespread F. s. subbuteo and the smaller, resident F. s. streichi.

Identification

• Adults possess slate-grey upperparts with a dark crown, two short black moustache stripes, and an unstreaked white throat.
• The underparts are whitish with black streaks, while the thighs and undertail coverts are unstreaked rufous, creating distinct red 'trousers' and a rufous vent visible in close views.
• Measuring 29–36 cm in length, this species appears sickle-like in flight due to its long pointed wings and square tail, often resembling a swift when gliding.
• Juveniles are generally much browner with scaled upper parts and streaked buffy thighs and undertail coverts, distinguishing them from adults.

Habitat

This species inhabits open country across the Palearctic realm, including farmland, marshes, taiga, and savannah, typically in lowlands with scattered small woods. The nominate subspecies is a long-distance migrant that winters in Central and South Africa and South Asia, whereas the streichi subspecies is resident in regions from Myanmar to south China and north Indochina. It is a rare vagrant in North America, Australia, and Brazil.

Diet

The Eurasian hobby preys on large insects such as dragonflies, as well as small bats, birds, and even swifts on the wing. It forages by soaring slowly in circles to transfer insects from its talons to its beak for consumption. The bird is crepuscular when not breeding, hawking principally in the mornings and evenings.

The species' English name derives from Old French hobé or hobet, becoming the trademark for the Subbuteo games company after its creator, an ornithologist, was refused permission to register 'Hobby'. It was also historically used in falconry due to its bold and courageous nature, trained to hawk birds like quails and larks.
