White-necked Laughingthrush

Overview

The white-necked laughingthrush (Garrulax strepitans) is a bird species in the family Leiothrichidae native to tropical Southeast Asia. It is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its wide range and large population, despite a probable decline from habitat destruction.

Identification

• Approximately 32 cm long with pale brownish-grey plumage.
• Features a chestnut crown and a brownish-black face and throat separated by a diffuse white collar.
• Possesses a dark iris with a grey bill and legs.
• Known for a distinctive laughing call.

Habitat

Found in central and northern Thailand, eastern Myanmar, western Laos, and Yunnan province in southwestern China. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests, as well as scrubland, at altitudes between 500 and 1,800 m.

The species is described as fairly common across its range, with the notable exception of China, where it is considered rare.
