White-throated Gerygone

Overview

The white-throated gerygone (Gerygone olivacea) is a species of bird in the family Acanthizidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species is also known by common names such as white-throated warbler, white-throated flyeater, bush canary, and native canary.

Identification

• Underbelly is coloured olivacea, Latin for 'olive-green'.
• Found in the genus Gerygone, which derives from the Greek word 'gerugonos' meaning 'echos'.

Habitat

The species is distributed across south-eastern New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia, occupying tropical, subtropical, and temperate zones. It primarily inhabits open dry eucalyptus woodland and dense riparian vegetation, though it can also be found in remnant woods in farmland, gardens, and open eucalypt savannah. In New Guinea, it may occur in Melaleuca (paperbark) forests from the coast up to 650 m elevation.
