Grey-throated Barbet

Overview

The grey-throated barbet (Gymnobucco bonapartei) is a species of bird belonging to the Lybiidae family. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Dark, robust body with a distinctive tuft of feathers on the forehead.
• Mostly feathered head and dark bill, distinguishing it from related barbets.
• Eye color varies by region, appearing pale in the east and dark in the west.
• Vocalisations include nasal "squeaky toy" calls, sharp "peet" notes, and a dry rattle.

Habitat

This species is found in Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. It commonly inhabits humid forests and areas of secondary growth, often occurring around dead trees.

Diet

It consumes a diverse group of fruits, including Allophyllus, figs, and Musanga.
