Grey-headed Robin

Overview

The grey-headed robin (Heteromyias cinereifrons) is a small passerine bird endemic to northeastern Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. Classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, it belongs to the Australasian robin family Petroicidae.

Identification

• Grey crown and lores contrasting with white throat and pale underparts
• Olive-brown ear coverts and upperparts with distinct white wing patches
• Pale grey breast transitioning to a white belly
• Dark brown bill and eyes

Habitat

This species is restricted to subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests within Australia. Its geographic range extends from Cardwell to the Bloomfield River in northeastern Queensland.

Breeding pairs construct their nests from bark, grass, and dry leaves bound together with spider webs, often lining them with strips of fern and palm. These shallow cup nests are frequently situated in lawyer vines up to 10 m above the ground.
